In Hillcrest, San Diego’s gayborhood just north of the downtown core, dessert options are abundant. One of the best places to satisfy a sweet tooth is Babycakes, a cafe/bar that serves some of the biggest and most frosting-laden cupcakes in San Diego.
Cupcakes come in a mind-boggling variety of flavors, including classics like vanilla, chocolate, and red velvet, plus inspired flavors like blood orange, guava mango, and peanut butter and jelly. For $3.50 you get a larger-than-usual cupcake topped with a towering swirl of icing.
Of the two flavors I tried (Lemon Bavarian and Pomegranate), the lemon was the undisputed winner. The highlight of the light, fluffy cupcake was the gob of lemon curd atop the rich, creamy icing. The colorful touch of citrus brightened up the cupcake, making it simultaneously one of the most refreshing and most decadent desserts I’ve ever had.
The pomegranate cake was also tasty. The tart, fruity pomegranate juice perked up the base of the cupcake, coloring it a gorgeous red, and spiking it with a unique berry flavor. What kept this particular cupcake from the winners’ circle was the icing, which had a light, whipped texture, but ultimately was nowhere near as flavorful as the icing on the lemon cupcake.
With such a wide variety of cupcakes available, a place like Babycakes deserves multiple visits to get the full experience and ultimately decide which cupcake is your favorite. If you happen to visit at a time when the Lemon Bavarian is in rotation, make sure to snap one up!
