Grocery Goods: Lovin’ Scoopful Ice Cream

When it comes to dessert, I’m not good with restraint. And while low-fat and low-sugar options sound good in theory, I’ve found that as a general rule of thumb, I’d rather eat half of the full-fat or full-sugar option. So, when I was contacted by the good people at Lovin’ Scoopful, which has half the fat of the regular stuff, I wasn’t too optimistic that it would replace my Ben and Jerry’s habit.

Still, never one to turn down a free dessert, I went to Albertson’s armed with a fistful of coupons. After glancing at the flavors on the Lovin’ Scoopful website, I was excited to try the Oh My Blueberry Pie, Caramel Chocolate Crispy Treat, and Super Duper Peanut Butter Cup. Instead, my only options were Yummy Cake and Cookie Dough, Caramel Chocolate Heaven, and Out of This World Chocolate. So, I got all three.

The first thing I noticed  about the Lovin’ Scoopful ice cream  was the texture — which was more like sorbet than your standard, full-fat ice cream. Instead of being rich and creamy, it was a bit icy, as is typical with low-fat ice creams. Moving on…

First up was the Cake and Cookie Dough flavor, which has a base of cake batter flavored ice cream with cookie dough pieces mixed in. What was most apparent about this tub was the color, which was white as snow. Unfortunately, it was overpoweringly sweet. The cookie dough bites were also a bit grainy, but otherwise, not particularly memorable (or tasty). Next!

Digging into the Caramel Chocolate flavor was exciting. The tub was full of caramel-filled chocolate cups and a rich, chocolate ribbon. But tasting it brought the same reaction, which was that I needed a glass of water, STAT!

Luckily, I found salvation with Out of This World Chocolate, which, while still sweet, was not nearly as cloying as the other flavors. The texture was smoother and it tasted a bit like a Fudgesicle. While I wouldn’t bother eating another bite of the first two flavors, the chocolate is worth a try. Based on the success of this flavor, I’m confident that What the Fudge is a good option if your grocery store doesn’t have Out of This World Chocolate in stock.
